Im about to adopt a weimaraner puppy, i just need a ballpark estimate price wise on certain things.?
Written by on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 – 9:52 pm -mainly i need estimates on the food and medicine. stuff you need to buy constantly. also one or two time buys like bed, leash, etc.
Food depends, but I highly recommend premium puppy food and dog food. For a Weimeraner, it would probably run about $25 a month.
Puppy shots are usually between $50-$75, and then expect that expense once a year.
Spay/Neuter varies, but probably around $200. Spaying is more expensive than neutering, and you have time to shop around. There are low cost spay/neuter clinics in most cities.
Beds for a large dog are around $90, as is a kennel, if you go that route for house training. Leashes depend-I recommend the kind that has a plastic handle and retractable lead. It is about $40 for a larger breed dog, but it is harder to lose and he won't chew it up.
It is also easier to train him on, and they are very safe.
Then there are the rawhide chews/pigs ears/bones. With a puppy, they will probably run around $20-$30 a month, depending on how much he chews. That goes down as the dog gets out of the chewing stage-my dogs are 1 and 4, and they are just treats. A Kong is also a great investment, as the dog will never be able to chew it up and it can save money.
Heartworm meds are $20 a month, and flea preventative is about the same.
So, overall, expect to spend about $1000 the first year, and then about $800 or so a year after that.

what medicine? Food is up to you if you want to spend ALOT of money. I recommend Pedigree. I have all 3 of my dogs on it and they love it! It's moderately priced and it wasn't on any of those recall lists. but for crate, leash, collar, etc….i would say be ready to spend at least $200. Vet expenses are separate, especially if he/she needs another set of puppy shots. Don't forget when they are old enough, about 6 mths you will need to get them tested for heartworm. Tests usually are about $14-20 a year, the meds are anywhere's from $17-35 a month but you HAVE to give it to them or they will be more susceptible to heartworm disease. You can read more about that at the heartworm society

Puppies are sort of like children in that they always cost more than you think! If you use a high quality kibble for your pup and you treat him monthly for flea and heartworm prevention, if you buy him toys, bones, leashes, collars, dog shampoo, boarding during vacations etc those are normal expenditures running about a thousand a year. Then you have all the puppy shots plus a spay or neuter, plus any unexpected vet visits for accidents or illness, plus cost of fencing your yard and basic obediance class, so you are looking at maybe another thousand a year. It is way better to overestimate the expense than be blindsided by it when stuff happens.

What a great dog…a regal expensive dog if purchased……figure 100 to 150 for shots and flea & tick stuff…..100 if you have to buy an outdoor house…..you can spend 50 to 100 on a bed or make one for a lot less with blankets, etc. … flea markets and garage sales are great savers for kennels by 75% OR MORE.40LB BAG OF FOOD LASTS HOW LONG? YOU COULD SPEND 15 AT WALMART TO 36 AT PET STORES Rawhide bones, stuffed toys,leashes,collars,balls…….$50…….I had four dogs at once and we all got our teeth cleaned once a year besides the yearly shots ,yeast infections, flea and tick stuff, nail clippings, and it was worth every penney as they enriched our lives far beyond the $1.00 or so a day it cost me…..Good luck….and congratulations on your new "buddy"…..I forgot about the fence or at least a stake and tether for the back yard and the license…..there is a fairly famous set of photographs of that breed posing in suits and stuff….it's pretty funny….you could probably google it and pull it up….they might be black and whites, I can't remember…..possibly done in the 80s……
