Are Weimaraners good dogs?

Written by on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 – 7:26 pm -

me and my parents may be looking for a new dog soon, and i’ve always wanted a weimaraner. My mom is really into golden retrievers (and so am i) and so we’ve always had them as dogs. i just want some variety, and I need a good reason to show my mom why we should get a weimaraner for a change.

Weimaraners are great dogs, but they’re not for everyone. They are intensely loyal to their owner and often a bit uncomfortable with other people. They are also very territorial. They can be nice to children, but they’re very powerful and energetic and may not be safe for small children for that reason. They also require a huge amount of exercise, so someone needs to be available to do that every day with one of these dogs.

Yes, they are good dogs, but be warned: If you don’t have time to exercise a dog on a daily basis (and not just a quick walk around the block) as well as time for training, do not get one. They are smart dogs but very high energy, and the two combined can be dangerous if they are not given something to do. Make sure you socialize them very well as a puppy too.

they are great dogs.BUT get one from a good gene.
In my training class, we had one, his name was Einstein. He was so hyper.
Worse than the labs and the jack russel!
know the dog if you are not getting one from a breeder.
Know it well before you got one.
    Mos are great dogs!!

They are, but they are high energy and if you aren’t active, or plan on becoming very active, I don’t recommend them.

Weimaraner Club of America has great information, as well as a breeder referral.

Go to akc.com, look up the breed, it will tell you the temperament of the dogs, and alot of info you need to read, so you can discuss with your parents.

Weims are wonderful dogs for families that are active. Most are not as layed back as goldens but can be just as enjoyable. They are really intelligent and require training. They also require quite a bit of exercise especially when they are young adults. They are hunting dogs which means that they were bred to run long distances for along time, just like a marathon runner. Some things to ask the breeder include tests for hip/elbow dysplasia, thyroid, HOD, bleeding disorders, and eye issues.

they are very good dogs if you are an active person and are outside alot because they are very active and love being outside cuz they were bred to hunt and they are shaped the way they are so they can run fast to catch there prey!!!!

For the right people who have done their research and know what they’re getting into, they are terrific dogs. They’ll need exercise galore, and tend to be “busier” than Goldens.

I think weimaraners are wonderful dogs and they are so beautiful. I really wanted one as a companion to my large english pointer. If you know anything about pointer- they are very intelligent, highly active sight hunting dogs..similar to the weims. Our pointer needs so much exercise- my bf would take him on 4 mile runs on a mini bike and he still wanted more- it wasn’t cruel he was just that fast. We would take him for 2 30 minute walks and take him to the dog park for at least an hour running and chasing a laser pointer. He is always up for more and he just starting settling down at 6 years old..so if you can take on a dog that will be highly active almost puppylike for the next 3 years than this should be a dog you should get, if not you may want to reconsider. Also i tried for a long time scouting around for a weim puppy and besides that most are over $1000, all the puppies at the rescues were mostly over 6 months old- we personally wanted one that was 8-12 weeks old. But in the end we went to the shelter and adopted a 9 week old catahoula leopard puppy and haven’t been happier. Goldens and weim definitely differ in the amount of exercise and training but it is up to you and your mom in how much you want this dog. Here are some helpful sites on the character of these dogs and the basic requirements:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weimaraner
Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training & exercise. These dogs are not as sociable towards strangers as other hunting dogs such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers.
